February is Black History Month--a time dedicated to honoring Black Americans and their contributions throughout history.

NML App for Android Goes Live 12.27.10

We've heard that some people (clearly silly ones) think that classical music is behind the times.
We, keepers of the NML, disagree.
We think you should be able to listen to a Barbara Strozzi aria or a Mahler symphony just as easily as a Janelle Monae album. So we continue to work on making our music as mobile as possible.

You probably already know about our apps for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch--but Apple Resisters can now prepare to rejoice, because...

The Naxos Music Library App for Android will go live on December 27, 2010!

You will be able to listen to personal, institutional, and Naxos-created playlists as well as browse and stream the full NML on the go from your Droid!

Just search the Android Market for "Naxos Music Library" to download the free app!

Once the app is installed, it's time to make sure you have some playlists!

Institutional Users

1. Visit the NML. If you are a member of an institution like a school, university, or public library, you can visit your institution’s unique webpage (ex. http://myschool.naxosmusiclibrary.com). Ask your librarian or contact us here at Naxos if you’re not sure how to get there.

2. Navigate to the Playlists tab and sign up for a Student/Member Playlist Account. You will receive a confirmation e-mail to the e-mail address you used to sign up. Click the link in the e-mail to confirm your account.

3. The login you created for your Student/Member Playlist Account will be your login for the app as well.

4. Any playlist in your personal folder or your institution’s folder will be available, in addition to all of our Naxos-created playlists. You can also browse and stream the full NML--from New Releases and Recent Additions to any old recording from any label--anytime, anywhere.

Individual Users.

You will not need to adjust anything to use the app. Just use your normal NML login to log in to the app!

We'd like to also take a moment to give a big thank you to our developers. The app works and looks great--all that hard work has paid off. So THANK YOU!

Calling All App Users!

So you have downloaded an app for the NML, NMLJ or NSWL.

That's great…unless you can’t use it.

What I have heard from a lot of librarians and professors lately is that they need an easy step-by-step guide to setting the app up for first time use. Here by popular demand is just such a guide!

Creating a Personal/Student Playlist for Naxos Apps

The iPhone app was designed with our institutional users in mind, so a subscription through a university, library, school, or orchestra works. It just works little differently on an iPhone than on a computer.

For one thing, it does NOT require any work with IP authentication or the university's proxy server.

To generate a login for the NML app, you should:

1. Visit the NML page for your institution (library, university, school, orchestra, etc.) from a computer by going through the institution’s unique URL: http://example.naxosmusiclibrary.com

2. Navigate to the Playlist area and click “Sign Up” in the "Personal/Student" playlist account area.

3. Create a login on the sign up page. This login, consisting of your email address and a custom password, then becomes your login for the app.

See the tutorial below if you need help creating a personal/student playlist account.

Once you are fully signed up you will have access to the institution’s playlists and you can create your own customized playlists as well. I recommend creating a playlist on a computer before attempting to access through the app. For some reason it seems to make your first access run more smoothly.

You can also use the app to search and browse the full NML anytime, anywhere! That means you can stream music anytime, anywhere!

600,00 Tracks and Climbing!

What a great week this has been for the NOL Team!

Not only did we launch the Naxos Spoken Word Library App and welcome our 2,000th Twitter follower, but we also hit that wonderful 600,000 track marker!

To celebrate this milestone we've decided to spotlight a feature of the NML that will help you keep up with all of those additions!

The NML RSS Feed

Below you can find a step by step (and picture by picture) guide to using the RSS Feed available with the NML.

Adding as many albums per day as we do (sometimes, it's over 100 albums per day!) it can be tough to keep track of just how many new additions there are. The RSS feed includes every album added to the NML. For those who don't use RSS feed's currently, the page can feel a bit daunting...don't fret!

Thanks to the folks at www.feedicons.com for providing the icon to the left! Visit their site to download all shapes, colors, and resolutions of the RSS icon!



First, visit the "Home" screen in the NML. Simply click on the little house (see below). Then, click on the RSS Icon


In a separate tab, the window below will open. If you use an RSS manager, you'll know what to do here. You can also use the new version of Outlook to manage your feeds, and that's what I'll be showing below.

Next, Outlook will prompt you to "allow" the feed.

And voila! Every album added to the NML will now be available for you to quickly, and easily browse. I'll leave it to you to figure out how to use this information, but now you know how to get it!

*Live* - NML iPhone App - Version 2.0

I'm such a geek for updates. Really. I am guilty of hitting that "Refresh" button on just about every page, hoping for something new. The good news, is that we actually have a VERY cool update to share with everyone!

The NML iPhone App has been so well received (and we THANK YOU!!!), that we couldn't just stop there. There was so much more that could be done! Well, see below for some great screenshots of the new NML iPhone App 2.0.

That shouldn't stop us from updating you though? Right? :) If you don't have the current NML iPhone app, click the link below to download it now!

Version 2.0 of the app will still allow you to view your custom, individual playlists, as well as the professor/administrator created ones. Those menu's received a slight "Texture" update. I'm a fan of the new buttons!


Not sure about what to listen to? Soon , there will be some "Naxos" created playlists too! These will also start to appear on the "Web-Based" NML pages too, so keep your eyes peeled!

Who knows, we may even hold contests for our readers to submit playlists! Thinks like composer or period specific playlists are always great!

If you're following us on Twitter or Facebook, you may have seen my love for Steve Reich. Ever since my Musicology research paper in college, I've had a soft spot in my musical heart for his music. Hence my 4 differnet Steve Reich compilation playlists.

The same goes for my hopeful inclusion of a "Marimba" playlist. (being a percussionist)

The next "button" on our stop, is the Catalog button. This menu brings up a simple search bar. Essentially, it performs a keyword search within the Naxos Music Library and displays the results on your iPhone/iPod Touch!

Searching for "Brahms" brings up this window ----------------->

The next window brings up a track listing, as well as the album description. See below for another side-by-side set of screenshots.

The player window remains unchanged, except for the fact that you can now hit the "Back" button, navigate to a new piece, scroll, browse..etc... all while the music plays!

The Naxos Music Library Jazz has its own iPhone App! The function and form mirrors the NML App. It also, allows access to your NML Jazz individual and account based playlists remotely!

NML at AMS

The American Musicological Society recently held their annual meeting in Philadelpia, PA.

I had a great time, and got some great feedback! We appreciate all of the folks who came by and talked about everything from the new iPhone App, to the Naxos Video Library (Look for a post shortly with some great new Developments and Screenshots), to the AWESOME Virtual Haydn.

Q: What will the App do?
A: The NML iPhone and iPod touch application will allow remote access to your personal and account playlists. Below are some screenshots of the NML Playlist window, and a direct comparison to the NML iPhone App window.

The playlist tabs in the NML, make up the initial iPhone App window. Folders follow suit, and third come the actual playlists. The progression from the log-in window on the App to listening to a selection, should feel completely natural!











Q: Who can use the App?

Q: Will buffering be a problem on the iPhone?

A: Buffering will not be a problem! The Naxos Music Library has recently completed a "behind the scenes" transition to enhance the overall streaming experience. Streaming on both the NML website and the iPhone App have been fully optimized and tested.

I've spent my time (Nick) using the iPod Touch through many wireless networks. Everywhere from our office, to my home internet, to (yes, quite the interesting location) the local Mall's food court. Happily, the NML worked everywhere, with no interruption in streaming.

Q: How much room will the app take up?
* From Kate in Georgia

A: I can only speak to the Beta App, as final file size may vary, but the NML Beta App clocks in at 540 KB. Remember, the final version will probably differ a little bit in file size.

Q: Do Playlists I create on the NML update in real time? How fast can I access newly created playlists?
* From Kim in Southern California

A: Updating playlists is simple!
1. Create a new playlist on the NML website.
* For help creating playlists, see our earlier post here

2. Click the "Home" button on your iPhone. (It's the button on the bottom which takes you to the navigation window"

3. Log back into the NML iPhone Application.

4. Voila! The playlist should now appear in your list!

Q: How much will the App Cost?

A: Absolutely nothing! The app will be available through the App store. We'll post links on the NML and Naxos' websites, and most likely here on our blog that link direct to the App when it's ready to go!

Q: I know nothing about iPhones. Am I going to be expected to troubleshoot my students' devices?
* From Alex in Missouri

A: Not in the least. Since the playlist window is authenticated by a Username and Password tied to a specific playlist, and not by IP address, Referring URL, Proxy Servers, or any combination of the three, there will be NO troubleshooting necessary of the "nuts and bolts" by account administrators.

What you may want to do, as account administrators, is to host a training session on creating personal playlists. If you need help, or would like Naxos to be a Webinar presenter for your staff or students, simply say the word! We can host the entire presentation on our end!

Hi Folks!

It's important to remember that although the overall layout can, and probably will change a bit, a teaser never hurt anyone!

Access to your NML Playlists (both personal and account/professor created) anytime, anywhere is certainly a feature I am THRILLED about!
